Why you should include skincare in your veganuary

You’ve probably heard of Movember (aka no shave November) but have you heard of veganuary, the month-long challenge to go vegan in January?

What is veganuary?

Veganuary was created in 2014 to challenge people across the globe to try eating vegan for the month of January and hopefully the rest of the year. Over 400,000 people took on the veganuary challenge in 2020 hoping to help the environment, improve their health, and stop animal suffering.

Going vegan means following a completely plant-based diet free from all animal products. Including meat, dairy, eggs, and even honey! Although this may seem extreme, there are plenty of ways to easily make vegan swaps for your favorite non-vegan products.

If you are hooked on the vegan diet and want to expand it to the rest of your lifestyle, switching to vegan skincare products is the perfect step! The veganuary campaign is mainly focused on a vegan diet, however, including vegan skincare products in your veganuary challenge is an easy addition.

Is cruelty-free the same as vegan?

Before we dive into the wonders of vegan skincare let's make a quick clarification: does cruelty-free = vegan? The answer is no!

Vegan is defined as containing no animal ingredients, animal by-products, or animal-derived products. Cruelty-free is defined by involving no experimentation on animals. This means that cruelty-free products could still contain common skincare ingredients that are not vegan. For example, beeswax, carmine (crushed beetles), gelatin (cow or pig bones), and lanolin (wool grease) are some common animal-based skincare ingredients that could still be found in a cruelty-free product.

Although there is not an official vegan marker on products, look for the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) bunny on product packaging to find great vegan products. So now that we are clear on what vegan skincare is and is not, let's dive into what makes it amazing!

Why vegan skincare?

Vegan skincare is quickly growing in popularity, and for good reasons! The benefits of vegan skincare are very similar to the benefits of a vegan diet: better for the environment, better for the animals, and better for your skin.

1. Save the planet

Helping your skin and the planet at the same time? Everyone wins!
Eliminating or lessening your use of animal products is an excellent way to help the environment. Animal agriculture is extremely damaging to the environment due to the excessive release of greenhouse gasses. It also consumes a massive amount of water and land.
Switching to vegan skincare can help you care for the environment. Every small change helps!

2. Save the animals

It’s pretty self-explanatory that vegan skincare is better for the animals. But as explained earlier, not all vegan products are necessarily cruelty-free.
In order to ensure that you are caring for the animals in every way you can, look for both cruelty-free and vegan labels when selecting your skincare. When using skincare products that are both vegan and cruelty-free you can be confident in knowing that no animals were involved in any way.

3. Save your skin

In addition to feeling great about helping animals and the environment, you can also feel great about helping your skin!
Because of the lack of animal products, vegan skincare often has fewer preservatives and other additives that can be irritating. Vegan skincare is fantastic for those who have sensitive skin as it contains fewer ingredients that are likely to cause irritation.
Most vegan skincare includes a variety of plant products that are beneficial to your skin’s health. Plants are full of vitamins, minerals, oils, and antioxidants that are fantastic for helping you achieve that healthy glow.
Adding vegan skincare to your skincare routine is an easy switch, you may even be surprised to find that some of the products you are already using are vegan!
